Digital Product Passport (DPP)
The Digital Product Passport is coming in phases, also for construction products. PimLayer is the data foundation that makes your product data DPP-ready, today.
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) becomes the digital identity card of your product: technical, material and environmental data across the whole life cycle, retrievable via a data carrier on the product. It is coming in phases per sector, and for construction there is a separate track. Those who structure their product data now are ready later without improvising.
What is a Digital Product Passport?
A DPP is a digital file that bundles the essential information about a product across its whole life cycle: technical specifications, materials, origin and environmental impact. That data becomes retrievable via a data carrier on the product, such as a QR code. The goal is transparency, traceability and a more circular economy.
It is coming in phases, per sector
The DPP is introduced via the European Ecodesign regulation (ESPR), each time per product group with its own timeline. For construction, there is also a separate track via the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR). The timeline below outlines the main points.
ESPR · general framework
Construction · CPR track
What does this mean for construction?
The revised CPR makes the DPP part of the CE marking and of a central EU construction products database. The environmental requirements are already increasing now (GWP from early 2026 for priority products) and grow quickly in the coming years. For producers and distributors of construction materials, that means: you have to have more and more technical and environmental data available in a structured and controllable way, per product.
How PimLayer makes you DPP-ready
A Product Passport stands or falls with complete, reliable and structured product data. That is exactly what PimLayer is made for: you manage product, technical and environmental data in one place, linked to every product and every packaging, with version control and exports. That way you build the data foundation today on which you later deliver a compliant Product Passport, in line with GS1 and CSRD & packaging.
Why start with your DPP now?
The regulation is not yet fully fixed, but the direction is clear and irreversible. Those who structure their product data now do not have to panic later when the obligation for their product group comes into effect. Curious whether your product data is DPP-ready? We are happy to look at that together.
Answers to your questions
What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
A digital file that bundles the essential information about a product across the whole life cycle: technical specifications, materials, origin and environmental impact. Authorities, partners and end users can consult that data, usually via a QR code or data carrier on the product. The goal is transparency, traceability and a more circular economy.
When does the DPP apply for construction?
For construction products, the introduction runs via the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR, EU 2024/3110). Environmental data such as the Global Warming Potential (GWP) is already mandatory from early 2026 for priority products (concrete, steel, insulation). The broader DPP obligations follow in phases, expected towards 2029-2030, with full coverage by 2032. Exact dates depend on implementing acts and harmonised standards.
What is the difference between ESPR and CPR?
The ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) is the general European framework that introduces the DPP per product group, batteries first, then textiles, furniture and tyres, among others. The CPR is the specific track for construction products, which links the DPP to the CE marking and a central EU construction products database.
How do I prepare now?
By centralising and structuring your product, technical and environmental data in a PIM such as PimLayer. That way you have one reliable source and can deliver on time and correctly once the DPP obligation for your product group comes into effect.
